Our process will be 99 percent cleaner than conventional coal-burning technology.
Conventional coal plants crush and burn coal, emitting dangerous pollution and producing toxic fly ash. Our technology uses a chemical process -- without burning the coal -- to capture and remove the impurities from the coal. In fact, removing those impurities is essential to our process of isolating the hydrocarbons that form our clean substitute natural gas.
The site will be cleaner once we are operating our plant than it is today, because we will do a major remediation to remove the contamination currently present. This clean-up represents an up-front, $20 million community benefit.
We will capture and contain 85 percent of the carbon dioxide: the highest mandated level in the nation. We use local materials to make our product: Illinois coal and petroleum coke (a waste product from local refinery plants).
