Starting in the early 1970s and through most of the 1980s, Ted Stalnos was able to raise a family on the money he earned working at LTV Steel’s coke plant in Chicago’s East Side community.
A few years from now, he sees other local residents being able to do the same if plans to build a $3 billion coal gasification plant on the former LTV site work out.
At a ceremony Wednesday at the site, Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation that would help Leucadia National Corp. convert Illinois coal — at least 1 million tons a year — into synthetic natural gas. The project would create about 1,000 construction jobs and 200 permanent jobs.
